Almost 40% of the land trusts in the Midwest Region work within the Upper Mississippi river basin. These land trusts in Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska and Wisconsin are a diverse group who are protecting prime farmland, wetlands, urban landscapes, forests and other lands and waters across the basin, enhancing the resilience of the Mississippi River and its headwaters
The Alliance has assisted land trusts by offering tailored excellence services and a number of trainings regarding policy advocacy, drafting agricultural easements, and conserving land and water through leveraging federal funding programs and developing partnerships. Tailored excellence services include a variety of activities: Guided Standards and Practices Assessments, mentoring and coaching, and small grants. Mentoring projects and grants were used to improve organizational processes, strengthen boards, improve recordkeeping, complete strategic plans, implement development plans, determine stewardship cost needs, and complete baseline document reports.
