You didn’t get into conservation to file federal tax forms. But now, every year, you find yourself attesting to the accuracy of a 20-30-page financial document completed by an outside professional or a dedicated staff member or volunteer. How do you know it’s accurate? If this scenario sounds familiar, join longtime CPA Dana Chabot as he guides participants through the basic form and frequently required attachments, highlighting areas where land trusts need to pay special attention. After completing this webinar, you should understand:

  • Which supplementary schedules should you expect to see as part of your complete Form 990, and why?
  • Which disclosures are of special interest to land trusts. How are easements valued and reported on Form 990?  What additional disclosures about easements are required? How do you report in-kind contributions of land and donated easements?  What are “endowments,” and how should information pertaining to your endowments be reported?
  • How to use Form 990 to promote the mission and activities of your land trust. Which parts of the form are normally of greatest interest to the donating public? What information should you consider providing to help people better understand what your land trust has accomplished?
