New England

New England is the birthplace of private land conservation, and the Land Trust Alliance itself started its journey here in 1982. Small in area (slightly larger than Washington State), this six-state region boasts the largest number of member land trusts: 255 strong. New England is diverse in both its people and geography. The coastal plains of southern New England, the forests, peaks, and rolling hills of the northern Appalachian region and the Atlantic Ocean coastline provide habitat for wildlife, working farms and forests, clean drinking water, and important recreational opportunities and inspirational beauty for the numerous people living here.

Programs in New England

  • Southern New England Recordkeeping Program: In partnership with the state land trust associations in CT, MA and RI, the Alliance supports small and all-volunteer land trusts with recordkeeping resources, training and consulting support.
  • Field Notes eNewsletter: Read our monthly Field Notes email to hear about happenings in New England.
  • Land trust services: Land trusts can reach out to us for assistance with the following topics: excellence programming and capacity building, leadership development, peer exchanges, trainings, mentoring, board development, Standards and Practices implementation, partnership development, community conservation, climate change solutions and helping land trusts to improve their practices to better protect the local places people need and love.
