Wildlands Ecology Intern, Northeast Wilderness Trust
Northeast Wilderness Trust (NEWT) conserves forever-wild landscapes for nature and people. NEWT safeguards more than 63,000 acres across New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, Massachusetts, and Connecticut. Northeast Wilderness Trust is the only regional land trust focused exclusively on wilderness conservation. The Wildlands Ecology Intern will work closely with NEWT staff on a variety of data collection and stewardship tasks, primarily the establishment and initial monitoring of a series of long-term forest monitoring plots on NEWT Preserves, but other tasks may include wildlife camera placement and photo collection, soundscape monitoring, and assisting in the preparation of ecological reports. This internship will require some travel, occasionally overnight.

- Work with NEWT staff ecologist to establish, monument, and monitor up to 20 long-term forest monitoring plots on NEWT fee preserves, primarily the newly established Woodbury Wilderness Preserve in Central VT
- Continue and further develop wildlife monitoring efforts using remote cameras to establish species lists and capture compelling photos and videos of wildlife on NEWT preserves
- Assist in the development of protocols and collection/management of baseline soundscape data on NEWT preserves
- Collaborate with development and outreach staff at NEWT to collect and share media (photos, videos, sound recordings) useful for outreach and education purposes promoting wilderness education and conservation
- Connect individually with every member of the NEWT staff to learn more about Land Trust work and the various teams involved in making this work happen
- Collaborate on other NEWT projects and events according to your interests and as time allows
