THE POSITION The Land Acquisition Assistant will be part of a dynamic team working to permanently protect Marin’s agricultural land for agricultural use in ways that benefit healthy communities, clean water and air, diverse habitats, sustainable and regenerative agriculture, and climate resiliency. The Acquisition Assistant will participate in many aspects of our land conservation projects, including processing new conservation easement and land access applications from landowners interested in MALT programs, evaluating potential conservation projects, developing project maps using GIS and other software, and providing general real estate and program support to the MALT’s Conservation team. In support of MALT’s land conservation mission, the Acquisition Assistant will collaborate with the general public, project partners, contractors, and team MALT.
THE IDEAL CANDIDATE Has a passion for conserving natural and agricultural land for the benefit of future generations Experience working with public agencies and non-profit organizations in land conservation and/or real property acquisition, land use planning, and natural resource conservation An interest in emerging policy issues affecting land conservation, including land use, habitat protection, water quality and quantity, sustainable agricultural and forest land management, and climate change Experience in GIS and related technology and systems as applied to conservation planning, open space, parks, natural resources, land use, or similar fields, including system functionality and map production Familiarity or interest in, real estate transactions including appraisals, title work, due diligence, escrow, and closing A desire to pursue professional development to develop new skills and knowledge relevant to this position QUALIFICATIONS Bachelor’s degree or any combination of education and work experience in real estate, environmental studies or a related field Minimum one year of experience in land conservation, natural resource protection, parks, or another similar field Complete work accurately despite many interruptions
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES Knowledge of land conservation, planning, property evaluation, and environmental issues Basic principles and practices of land conservation, real estate, ecology, and land use planning Analyze data pertaining to a variety of conservation and other open space matters Familiarity with technical and legal issues of urban and regional planning, land use management, environmental compliance, and program management Use of GIS, GPS, and related software and hardware to collect data, perform analyses, and prepare maps and reports Understand and interpret title reports, maps, contracts, legal descriptions, deed restrictions and other real estate documents Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing Proficient with standard office software programs Demonstrated ability to handle multiple simultaneous responsibilities Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relations inside and outside of MALT Commit to regenerative, inclusive, local agriculture that provides local food, protects natural resources, sequesters carbon and affords dignified livelihoods to community members while addressing pressing problems of climate change, agricultural sustainability, and food security.
