Maine Coast Protection Inititative Press Briefing

Bath, MN - WHO:  Maine Coast Protection Initiative is the first land conservation collaborative of its size and kind, focusing a $1.5 million budget on creating grant funds, training, and partnerships to protect Maine’s extraordinary coast.  The Initiative is led by the Land Trust Alliance, Maine Coast Heritage Trust, Maryland State Planning Office, and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, and a coalition of more than 70 land trusts and their partners.  The initiative is being seen as a new model for coastal protection in other states.

WHAT: A briefing and public launch of this major coastal conservation initiative and the direct investment of half a million dollars in coastal conservation grants to protect the coast.

The press briefing will include:

  • Remarks by top government officials, including Margaret Davidson, Director of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Coastal Services Center. 
  • Discussion of the primary threats to the Maine Coast and strategies for preserving its character, recreational opportunities, and economic vitality.  
  • Special announcement of the recent Maine Coast Protection Initiative grant recipients for local organizations ranging from Downeast to South-coast.

The briefing will be followed by an informal lunch and optional site visits.

WHEN:  Tuesday, August 22nd 

10 am to12 pm - Briefing on the Maine Coast Protection Initiative
1 pm - Informal lunch provided
1 - 4 pm - Visits to coastal conservation sites (RSVP required)

Boat Trip: See firsthand how the character of Maine's coast is being conserved in the New Meadows River area, featuring protection of working waterfront, habitat, and cultural lands.

Field Trip: Visit the sites and the land trusts who have forged innovative partnerships with their communities, highlighting conservation links with farms, towns, and trails. 

WHERE: Briefing and lunch will be held at the Maine Maritime Museum, Bath, Maine.

WHY:  Rapid, unplanned development is threatening one of the most valuable resources of the State--the Maine Coast, known worldwide for its scenic vistas, lucrative access to the water, and rich habitat lands.  Maine Coast Protection Initiative is the first major initiative banding together more than 70 private land trusts with all levels of government and other partners in a coalition to meet this threat and ensure a sustainable future for the Maine Coast.
