Building brand one hiker at a time
What do you get when you mix summer hiking, a helicopter, free shirts, corporate sponsors and a beautiful lake? Lake George Land Conservancy’s annual Hike-A-Thon!
The idea behind our Hike-A-Thon is rather simple. Participants at different preserves meet and hike in groups the day of the event. As they make their way to a high point, a helicopter buzzes from one preserve to the next. At each location and at designated times, an onboard photographer snaps photos of the hikers. The hikers have great fun with the opportunity; there’s a thrill for everyone as they hear the thumping of the approaching helicopter. And most importantly, the event brings all sorts of people together to enjoy LGLC’s many different preserves.
Started to encourage hiking as part of LGLC’s 25th anniversary in 2013, our Hike-A-Thon has evolved into a much-anticipated annual event. The event is a wonderful way to reach new supporters, stay connected with established supporters and engage several generations who love the land around Lake George. Corporate sponsors also are engaged and media coverage helps grow the event and spread the message of our work.
The Hike-A-Thon is a unique and fun outreach event that has helped to bring the public onto LGLC trails and build our brand. While the trails and camaraderie are awesome, I must admit the helicopter is probably the most exciting part. But, hey, whatever helps get people outdoors is fine with us!
