Baseline documentation reports are the cornerstone of effective land conservation. As they record the condition of the land at the time the easement was put in place, and support the terms of the easement, they are essential in identifying the conservation attributes an organization plans on protecting as well as changes to the land over time, whether human or natural. This workshop will cover the basics of drafting effective baselines, including IRS regulations. Participants will learn the required and/or recommended components of baseline documentation as well as optional items that will help communicate with future land trust personnel and landowners and those items that should not be included. The course will also provide practical suggestions for how to complete baselines for easements that lack them and how to integrate baseline documentation into an easement stewardship program for ongoing effectiveness.
Audience: Land trust board members, staff or volunteers who are responsible for creating baseline documentation reports.
