The Board’s Role in Tough Economic Times

Harsh economic times and great financial uncertainty combine to make land trust stability a critical and challenging issue. Yet these times may also provide a great opportunity for groups prepared to respond.  How can the board effectively respond to the changed economic climate and provide leadership? This online workshop will present creative ways land trusts can deal with the current economic crisis while still advancing their conservation agendas.  Participants will learn strategies for:

  • Building community relationships that will help sustain their organization in tough economic times
  • Develop organizational stability and full board engagement
  • Identifying stable and diverse  revenue sources
  • Identifying appropriate fundraising strategies
  • Cultivating major donors in their communities
  • Weathering the current economic storm

 

Audience:

Land trust board members and staff who are responsible for managing land trust finances and operations.

 

Instructor: 

Marc Smiley is a partner with the consulting company Decisions Decisions in Portland, Oregon.  Marc is the author of the Alliance’s courses Land Trust Boards: Preparing for Perpetuity and Building the Foundation for Fundraising Success (forthcoming)Marc is a frequent training and workshop leader at Rally:  The National Land Conservation Conference.  Marc has been an organizational development consultant for more than 20 years, working with nonprofit and public organizations nationally involved in a spectrum of issues including land and river conservation, energy conservation, affordable housing, historic preservation and human service. He serves as a Trustee and with the Columbia Land Trust and a Commissioner for the national Land Trust Accreditation Commission.
