Fort Harrison State Park
Indianapolis, Indiana
Do you know how to effectively manage your land trust's funds so you can successfully protect the land that you love? Join your land trust colleagues to learn the tools you need to understand and more effectively oversee your land trust's financial management.
In the morning, you will focus on improving your financial literacy. Learn how to take full advantage of the tools at your disposal to direct and oversee your organization's financial wellbeing. You will discover how to better understand the elements of basic financial statements (balance sheets, statements of activities, statements of functional expenses), how to read them, and how they can be used to hold the organization accountable for meeting its financial goals.
In the afternoon, you will be familiarized with the process of risk assessment as it relates to financial management. Discover how to identify threats to your land trust's ability to carry out its mission and develop sound internal controls to be used as building blocks of effective financial reporting. You will develop an understanding of IRS and state financial reporting requirements, including requirements for audit or review of financial statements. You will also learn techniques for budgeting, including how to use Excel to simplify the preparation and handling of multi-year grants.
The instructor for this training is Dana Chabot, a CPA who provides accounting and financial management services to approximately two dozen not-for-profit organizations in Madison, Wisconsin. He has previously worked as an auditor performing financial statement and compliance audits for not-for-profit, manufacturing and retail organizations.
