First Award Given by Conservancy
for Landscape Conservation

LAKE GENEVA, WI -- The Geneva Lake Conservancy announced Roy Diblik, co-owner of Northwind Perennial Farm in Burlington, WI, as the organization’s first recipient of its Olmsted Award which recognizes excellence in landscape conservation. Diblik was presented the award at a private session in Lake Geneva on Saturday. He was recognized for his impact on conservation landscaping in the Geneva Lakes area. The award coincides with the GLC’s 35th anniversary.

John Anderson, one of the original founders of the Geneva Lake Conservancy, along with current GLC chairman Robert Klockars, presented the award to Diblik. “Roy Diblik is recognized at the forefront of landscape conservation. He has been growing traditional and native perennials since 1978, long before it was popular. He also emphasizes the relationship between garden designs, maintenance strategies and costs – another progressive approach,” Anderson said.

Diblik’s recent high-profile works include the Domes in Milwaukee, Louis Sullivan Arch Garden for the Modern Wing at the Art Institute of Chicago and a 6,000 square foot perennial garden for the Oceanarium at Chicago's Shedd Aquarium. Klockars noted, “Roy is in demand outside of the Geneva Lakes area, but he has also made a significant impact on the local area with recognizable landscaping at Hawk's View Golf Course, Grand Geneva's Spa, the Lake Geneva Library, Duck Pond and Fontana's main boulevard.”

Diblik is currently writing his second book for Timbers Press on developing perennial plant communities. His first book, Small Perennial Gardens: The Know Maintenance Approach, is in its second printing.

The Olmsted Award is named after the Olmsted family, visionary landscape conservationists. John Olmsted was the founder and first president of the American Society of Landscape Architects and a partner of Olmsted Bros., of Brookline, MA. His uncle and adoptive father, Frederick Law Olmsted, designed the landscapes of New York’s Central Park and the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair. Cousin and half-brother Frederick Law Olmsted, Jr. joined forces with John in managing the firm.

GLC chairman, Robert Klockars said, “The Olmsted Brothers’ company had an extraordinary long-term impact on landscape conservation, including the Geneva Lake area. Several properties on the north shore of Geneva Lake and the grounds of Yerkes Observatory reflect their landscape designs.”

The Geneva Lake Conservancy began in 1977 as the Committee to Save Geneva Lake by founders John Anderson, Bill Turner and Norm Barry. In 1982 the Committee formed another organization called Geneva Lake Land Conservancy to protect the land around the lake. The two groups merged in 1992 and became the Geneva Lake Conservancy. Since then, the GLC has expanded to protect all lakes in the area, including Geneva, Como and Delavan, woodlands, open spaces, wetlands, and farmland.

The Geneva Lake Conservancy is a 501(c)3 tax-exempt, not-for-profit organization and recognized land trust with 1,120 acres under protection. Its mission is to protect the environmental character of the Geneva Lakes area.

Largest Land Conservation Project in Wisconsin History Completed

MADISON, WI -- Gathering Waters Conservancy today applauded the announcement of the largest land conservation project in Wisconsin history – the St Croix-Brule Working Forest property, which comprises approximately 67,000 acres of working timberland and globally significant Pine Barrens in northwestern Wisconsin.

“This deal highlights the power of the Knowles-Nelson Stewardship Program – helping to support our state’s economy, while protecting important natural resources and providing public access,” said Mike Strigel, Executive Director of Gathering Waters Conservancy, the umbrella organization for Wisconsin’s 50 land trusts. “This project reinforces the Stewardship Program’s enduring bipartisan legacy in Wisconsin.”

Protection of this tract with a working forest conservation easement will conserve wildlife habitat and
enhance water quality by sustaining productive forests at a large scale and preventing forest fragmentation. Containing much of the last remaining unprotected globally-significant Pine Barrens, this property provides critical habitat for several threatened or endangered species.

“The collaboration here between the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, Lyme Timber and The Conservation Fund represents a public-private partnership that’s only possible because of our state’s investment in the Stewardship Program,” Strigel added.

Additionally, being situated adjacent to several publicly owned and managed conservation lands
including the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest, Brule River State Forest, Douglas County Forest,
and Bayfield County Forest, this property serves as a significant connector and will permanently stitch
together approximately one million acres of conserved lands creating a contiguous, un-fragmented, diverse habitat that include lakes, streams, open fields comprised of grasses and shrubs, and a variety of natural and planted pine, conifer and hardwood forests.

Conservancy Celebrates 10-Year Anniversary with a “Bookend Easement Donation”

DODGEVILLE, WI -- This year the Driftless Area Land Conservancy celebrates our 10-year anniversary with a “bookend easement donation” that features a wonderful conservation partnership and the protection of one of Wisconsin’s most unique natural communities. In 2003, the Malcolm Stack Foundation donated a 54-acre conservation easement to Driftless Area Land Conservancy, representing one of our very first conservation easement projects.

Our most recent easement donation, signed just this month, protects the remaining 105-acres of the Malcolm Stack Foundation property and solidifies the foundation’s commitment to helping protect one of Wisconsin’s truly unique and rare natural communities.

Since the time of the Malcolm Stack Foundation’s first easement donation, the conservancy has protected roughly 2,500 acres and 12 properties. It is fitting that the foundation “bookend’s” our first 10 years with this second important easement donation.

In addition to protecting the pine relict forests and associated oak woodlands, the conservation easement will permit and encourage continued uses such as field trips, guided hikes, photography, artist clinics, nature study and aesthetic enjoyment. Furthermore, plant communities and associated wildlife will benefit from this significant block of permanently protected habitat.

The Malcolm Stack Foundation was established in 2001 to promote land conservation and education. The foundation is dedicated to conserving land in the Driftless Area; and, in particular, foundation directors feel that it is imperative to preserve the pine relicts forests found on the property for future generations. Driftless Area Land Conservancy appreciates and values our partnership with the Malcolm Stack Foundation and would like to sincerely thank the Foundation board members for their commitment to conservation in southwest Wisconsin.

Southwest Wisconsin’s Pine Relicts: Our Oldest Driftless Denizens

These remnants (pictured above) from the glacial era are so sparse and hidden from noisy civilization that they are virtually unknown by most Wisconsin residents. Even if one chances upon a stand of these tall pines, perhaps during a walk or in pursuit of a deer or turkey, he or she may not consider the relationship of this forest community to our glacial past. Each relict, often less than 5 acres, typically contains over 75% of the 25 most common species in the northern pine forests. The resulting community, a unique blend of northern and southern species, deserves our veneration, care and protection.

Pine relicts are pine forest communities that have persisted in southern Wisconsin since the last glacier retreated some 10,000 years ago. These relicts were part of what was once an expansive pine dominated landscape in a cool southern Wisconsin climate. As time passed and the climate gradually warmed (6,500 - 3,000 years ago) prairie and oak savannas replaced nearly all of the pine forests throughout southern Wisconsin, except in very steep draws and among the rocky cliffs in the Driftless Area of Southwest Wisconsin. The Ridgeway pines are only one of two large pine relicts in Southern Wisconsin.

For more information on Wisconsin DNR-owned Ridgeway Pine Relict (No. 326), view the website.
