In 2004 the Internal Revenue Service began a serious reassessment of how it policed the nonprofit sector, and how it handled charitable donations of property -- including conservation easements.  That effort continues, and is resulting in increased audits of conservation easement donations, and of land trusts.  The Land Trust Alliance is working to educate the IRS about the land trust community and helping land trusts, donors and their attorneys challenge audits of good conservation projects.
