Funding for Land Conservation
Since the Land and Water Conservation Fund was first established in 1965, the federal government has invested tens of billions of dollars in land conservation, but LWCF has reached its $900 million cap only twice. Despite some disappointments, new approaches like Farm Bill easement programs and state and local ballot initiatives have gained momentum. Please join us in working to ensure the public commitment to land conservation remains strong.

With innovative
new programs like the Farm and Ranchland Protection Program and the Grassland
Reserve Program, the U.S. Department of Agriculture is helping to conserve
working landscapes across America. In May 2008, Congress passed a new Farm Bill that includes billions in new funding for these programs and new rules for their implementation were released in January 2009. Click here to learn more.
Federal Appropriations for Land Conservation
We need your help
every year to secure appropriations for the Land and Water Conservation Fund
(LWCF) and Forest Legacy programs, historically the most significant sources of
federal support for land conservation. This section includes information on using these and other federal programs along with things you can do to help restore the federal commitment to land conservation.
State Funding for Land Conservation
The Land Trust Alliance is most engaged in efforts to secure improved state and local tax incentives, but we’re also working in partnership with organizations like the Nature Conservancy and Trust for Public Land to support state and local funding initiatives.
