Economic Benefits Report & Farmbillnow.com

Advocates Alert October 18, 2012

If you were at Rally, we hope you heard the inspiring Farm Bill call-to-action relayed by the recipients of the Land Trust Excellence Award. If Congress fails to enact a Farm Bill in December, we could lose $500 million for land trusts to buy conservation easements. Fortunately, we have some exciting new tools to share:

New Report Showcases Economic Benefits of Ag Easements

Is there a tie between agricultural land easements and the economic success of surrounding communities? Check out our new report, funded by NRCS:

The Power of Leveraging Local and Federal Dollars to Strengthen Agricultural Land Easement Investments

The report features four Farm and Ranch Lands Protection Program projects from across the country that illustrate a direct and quantifiable link between easements and the economic vitality of their regions. Consider sharing the report with your representative's agriculture staffer. More.

Can You Spare 2 Minutes? Take action at Farmbillnow.com

There's a new, easier way to support passage of a Farm Bill that would provide $1.58 billion for land trusts to buy easements:

  1. Visit www.farmbillnow.com and enter your address
  2. You'll see a pop up box with easy options to sign a petition and/or send a social media post to your representative
  3. Pick a custom message to highlight conservation programs.

You might consider mentioning the new economic benefits report in your tweet or wall post, for example:
@YourRep Check out the economic benefits of Farm Bill conservation easements: http://bit.ly/OLcOqG. We need a #FarmBillNow!

Don't assume your rep. is already on-board or unattainable. This vote won't break down along party lines, so outreach to any rep, including yours, could make a big difference. Read and see video of the call-to-action relayed from Chairwoman Debbie Stabenow (D-MI) at the Land Trust Excellence Award presentation.

July 10: House Vote on Conservation Tax Incentive Coming Soon

The House of Representatives will vote on the Conservation Easement Incentive Act, perhaps as early as next week. Whether you use this incentive or not, this is an unprecedented opportunity for the entire House of Representatives to vote specifically on whether or not to help land trusts. Every vote will count, and we urge you to call your congressional office and ask your representative to support H.R. 2807 when it comes to the floor – and to get as many others as possible in your land trust and its local partners to do the same.
