Recognizing typical patterns of growth and understanding alternatives to coastal development are critical first steps in coastal land use planning. This course provides coastal planners and other participants with the background, examples, and strategies to foster more sustainable development in their own coastal communities.

Coastal Inundation Mapping | NOAA
Hands-on computer course - Land conservation is a method for mitigating storm and flood impacts. Identifying areas susceptible to flood inundation will help conservation planners and floodplain managers prioritize conservation efforts. This course teaches participants about the different types of coastal inundation, ways to map flood areas in the coastal environment, data and methodology limitations, and practical ways to apply this information to support state and local planning efforts.

GIS Tools for Strategic Conservation Planning | NOAA
This technical course teaches participants how to apply geographic information system (GIS) tools, methods, and analysis to strategic conservation planning using a "green infrastructure" approach. Green infrastructure is a designed network of natural area that benefits nature and people by maintaining essential ecosystem services that protect communities from climate impacts and enables a healthy, more adaptable ecosystem.

Introducing Green Infrastructure for Coastal Resilience | NOAA
This 3-hour course introduces participants to green infrastructure concepts, focusing on applying concepts to protect coastal ecosystem services that can assist in climate adaptation and coastal resilience.

Introduction to Coastal GIS | NOAA
Hands-on computer course - This three-day instructor-led course provides students with knowledge and skills to successfully use ArcGIS desktop software. Framed in a coastal management context, the course begins with geographic information system (GIS) fundamentals and introduces tools and techniques useful for addressing coastal issues.

Negotiating for Coastal Resources | NOAA
This training teaches basic negotiation skills, invaluable for enhancing coastal resource conservation. Students apply and practice principled negotiation skills using coastal management and land use case studies.

Planning for Climate Change | NOAA
This training covers the fundamentals of how to plan for climate change, how to conduct a vulnerability assessment, how current state regulations address climate change, and how other governments are taking on the challenge of preparing for climate change. Participants become familiar with key data sources and learn specific strategies for engaging stakeholders in climate change preparedness.

Public Issues and Conflict Management | NOAA
Conserving land in coastal areas can be a hotly debated and confrontational pursuit. This course will equip conservation professionals with the ability to design, conduct, and manage meetings and other collaborative efforts in public forums.

Roadmap for Adapting to Coastal Risk | NOAA
This three-hour training introduces the “Roadmap” assessment methodology designed to help communities characterize their exposure to current and future hazard and climate threats and assess how existing planning and policy efforts may integrate this information to address community issues.  For more information on training contact: csc.training.request@noaa.gov.

Brownfields Area-Wide Planning Grants Program | EPA
Funding from EPA’s Brownfields Area-Wide Planning Program facilitates community involvement in area-wide planning approaches to brownfields assessment, cleanup and subsequent reuse.  The grant funding and direct assistance should result in an area-wide plan which will inform the assessment, cleanup and reuse of brownfields properties and promote area-wide revitalization.

Coastal and Estuarine Land Conservation Program (CELCP) | NOAA
Established in 2002 to protect coastal and estuarine lands considered important for their ecological, conservation, recreational, historical or aesthetic values. The program provides state and local governments with matching funds to purchase significant coastal and estuarine lands, or conservation easements on such lands, from willing sellers. Lands or conservation easements acquired with CELCP funds are protected in perpetuity so that they may be enjoyed by future generations.

Coastal Impact Assistance Program USFWS

The Coastal Impact Assistance Program (CIAP) provides grant funds to qualified states for a wide range of conservation, protection, or restoration projects in coastal areas.

The Coastal Program provides incentives for voluntary protection of threatened, endangered and other species on private and public lands.

Community-based Restoration Program Funding | NOAA
This program provides funding and technical expertise to support high-priority habitat restoration projects that instill strong conservation values and engage citizens in hands-on activities. Through the program, NOAA, its partners, and thousands of volunteers are actively restoring coastal, marine, and migratory fish habitat across the nation to help sustain these vital habitats in the face of multiple stressors including climate change.  Proposals are requested for individual projects several times a year, either directly by NOAA’s Restoration Center or through its partners.

National Coastal Wetlands Conservation Grant | USFWS
Funding from the National Coastal Wetlands Conservation Grant Program is used to acquire, restore or enhance coastal wetlands and adjacent uplands to provide long-term conservation benefits to fish, wildlife and their habitat.

North American Wetlands Conservation Act | USFWS
This program provides matching grants to organizations and individuals who have developed partnerships to carry out wetlands conservation projects in the United States, Canada, and Mexico for the benefit of wetlands-associated migratory birds and other wildlife.

Open Rivers Initiative | NOAA
This initiative provides financial assistance and technical expertise to remove dams and barriers and restore habitat for the many species that migrate between the ocean and the nation’s freshwater rivers and streams. This initiative contributes to sustainability of U.S. fisheries, provides an economic boost for communities, and improves public safety. The projects provide key steps to increase survival and resilience of migratory species and their riverine habitats in the face of multiple stressors including climate change.

Smart Growth Grants | EPA
The EPA Smart Growth program sometimes offers grants to support activities that improve the quality of development and protect human health and the environment.  When these grants are offered, they will always be announced on the web page above and on www.grants.gov.
