The Partnership for Gulf Coast Land Conservation (PGCLC) is a new coalition of local, regional, state and national land conservation organizations devoted to advancing land and water conservation in the Gulf of Mexico region.

Our core mission is to work together across the five Gulf of Mexico states to increase the pace, quality and permanence of voluntary land and water conservation in the coastal region.

This partnership is modeled after successful land trust coalitions around the country that have worked together to protect millions of acres watersheds, wildlife corridors and important cultural resources. Private lands in the coastal region are among the region's most ecologically productive.

While there are many conservation efforts underway in the Gulf region, human activities and natural processes such as erosion, subsidence and sea level rise have taken a toll on habitat, wetlands and water resources in the Gulf Coast region. Today, there is a significant inventory of coastal lands for sale by willing and/or distressed sellers.  In addition, recent events such as the BP oil spill and the resultant planning and restoration funding present an unprecedented opportunity for conservation and resource agencies to work together on planning and implementing coastal restoration project.  The Partnership is helping land trusts in the region have an effective voice regarding how the money will be spent for real, meaningful and lasting restoration.

By enhancing the capacity of the organizations working on the ground in this region, supporting excellence, and facilitating collaboration, the Partnership for Gulf Coast Land Conservation will expand conservation management agreements with more private landowners of important natural areas in the Gulf region and advance the long-term protection and restoration of Gulf Coast ecosystems, habitats, waters, and other important environmental and community resources.

Preserving Land and a Legacy in Alabama

AL - The Harvard-educated lawyer deeply cared for his Alabama hometown – one of steel and historic social change. He played a major role in the integration of Birmingham’s steel mills and was lauded for his commitment to civil rights with honors during his lifetime and after his passing. But during and after fighting the good fight, his heart and mind often found solace in the lovely mountains and rivers of North Alabama near Mentone.
