2007 Highlights

Year In Review: Land trusts made great strides for land conservation in 2007—the Land Trust Alliance’s 25th anniversary year.

As a community, we have positioned land trusts to turn the tide on the critical loss of land in America and double the pace of conservation nationwide.

Across the country in 2007, land trusts reported seeing two, three, and even five-fold increases in the amount of conserved land, thanks to the new federal tax incentive enacted in 2006. Highlights of our 2007 program include:

Pace: Protecting More of the Places We All Love

  • The Alliance launched a national multimedia campaign to educate landowners about expanded tax incentive opportunities for conservation
  • Assembled a massive coalition of untraditional partners to change the U.S. tax code and create a flood of new conservation opportunities

Quality: Giving Strength to the People and Organizations Conserving Land

  • Created an education program strategically designed to teach the best practices in conservation
  • Mentored land trusts helping them prepare for accreditation; pilot tests were conducted by the Land Trust Accreditation Commission, an independent program of the Land Trust Alliance

Permanence: Ensuring that Places Protected Today Stay Protected Forever

  • Launched new Conservation Defense program t o offer legal assistance to the Land Trust Community on significant cases that will create important precedent for the entire conservation movement
