Conservation Defense
The great promise of land conservation is that our work is forever.
This goal has inspired the generosity of many donors and countless hours of volunteer and staff time. We are seeing, however, some troubling signs that “permanence” may not be as long as we thought.
Global climate change now threatens to alter the habitat and species that we worked so hard to protect. At the same time, utility companies and government agencies are targeting conservation lands as low-cost corridors for condemnation. And some landowners are taking legal action to challenge the permanence of conservation easements. It is clear that closing the deal is just the start of the conservation process, and that land trusts need strength and staying power to ensure permanence.
